Volunteer Duties

Acolyte

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the service begins.  Put on your robe and take your place in the back of the church.
  • Light the wick on the candle lighter during the prayer,  then during the Entrance hymn walk up the aisle, bow before the altar, and light the candles.   Take your seat in the front row.   Light the Christ candle, Advent candles on appropriate Sundays.
  • Go forward for communion when the Minister calls the Communion assistants.  After you have been served, take a tray of cups and stand next to one of the ministers.  After all have been served put your tray on the communion table and take your seat.
  • During the Exit hymn, Take the candle lighter, bow before the altar, light the wick from one of the candles and then extinguish the candles.  Lead the procession down the aisle.  Extinguish the wick and lay the candle lighter on the back table.  Return your robe to the hanger.

Altar Guild

  • Arrive 30 minutes before the service begins.  Hang the large banner, the side banner and attach the skirt to the piano.  Set out the communion trays, put bread on the plate and cover, fill the pouring chalices, and the pitcher. Put Vaseline on the pouring edges (to stop drips when pouring,)
  • Fill the common cup 1/4 full.  (No Vaseline.)
  • Put the round tablecloth on a table near the altar and put the baptism pitcher and bowl the table near the altar.
  • Place the collection plates on the table in the back of the Sanctuary.
  • Put the long white scarf on the altar, next the altar banner, then the linen scarf.
  • Place the Cross on the right side of the altar close to the front. Also place the chalices and pitcher on the right side (behind the Cross) and cover with a cloth, put the extra Communion napkins next to the bread plate, which goes behind the chalices.    Place one Communion tray, the base and cover in the center of the altar close to the front (facing the congregation).
  • Place the green service book in the center of the altar (behind the communion tray.)
  • Place the candles in the front on the left side and put the flowers behind them.
  • Place the narrow banner on the pulpit.
  • During Communion, refill the serving chalices from the pitcher.
  • After the service, remove the chalices and wipe them with a paper towel and store sleeves in white tubs.  Put soiled cloths in white tub.  Refill the communion trays and store in green tubs that go on the trailer.
  • Remove banners and piano skirt, fold and put on hangers then into garment bag.
  • The garment bag and white tubs are taken home for storage and washing/cleaning.

Assisting Minister

  • Arrive 20 minutes before the service begins.  Put on your robe and check with the Minister for any changes/additions to the bulletin/service. Sit in the front row.   Read the 1st  lesson, lead the Psalm, read the 2nd lesson.  Lead the prayers, and other areas marked AM in the bulletin.
  • Distribute bread during Communion.   Say to each communicant "This is the body of Christ given for you".   Make the sign of the cross on the forehead of children not communing and say "Jesus loves you always".
  • Accept the offering plates from the ushers, face the altar, raise the plates above your head in an offering God.  Set the plates on the altar.
  • During the Exit hymn, join the Pastor at the altar, bow and walk down the aisle to the back of the church.  Return your robe to the hanger.

Bread Baker

  • Bake/provide 3 loves of bread for the Welcome table 30 minutes before the service begins

Bulletin

  • Compile scripture readings, prayers, music lyrics liturgies (from provided sources) into bulletin format and print copies at the church office.  Deliver copies to church 30 minutes before the service begins.
  • Provide electronic or disk copy to the projectionist.

Communion Assistant

  • Come forward when the Pastor calls the Communion assistants ( CA).   After the Pastor and the Assisting Minister have served all of the Communion assistants, one adult CA will serve the ministers.
  • Then take your pouring chalice and a napkin and stand next to the Youth CA who will have the cup tray.  Pour wine into each cup as it is presented.  Say "This is the blood of Christ shed for you."   Also say the blessing to those who have cups with juice.   After all have communed, return your chalice to the altar and take your seat.
  • Robes are provided

Greeter

  • Arrive 30 minutes before the service begins.
  • Put on  "Greeter" badge from container.  Stand just outside the sanctuary, greet the worshipers and distribute bulletins, and other handouts.  Take your seat after the Entrance hymn.
  • Assist with collection of offering.  The plates are located on the table in the back of the Sanctuary.  Pass the plates down the rows during the Special music time.   Give the plates to the Ushers who will take them forward during the Offertory music.
  • Encourage visitors with Welcome packet to fill out the visitor card in the packet and place it in the offering plate.

Nursery Attendant

  • Arrive in the Nursery (Library) 30 minutes before the service begins. (Set-up Crew, Musicians, Altar Guild etc. may need childcare while setting up the Sanctuary)
  • Set out the toys to make the area welcoming for the children.   Pick up toys when children leave.
  • Place name tags on the children as they arrive.  If a visitor brings their child/ren, make a note of who will come to get the child/ren.
  • Never leave the children alone.
  • Verify the names of the people picking up the children.

Projectionist

  • Proficient at Power Point to edit document
  • Set up equipment/Test display
  • Operate the remote selector during the service
  • Pack up equipment

Sound Board

  • Arrive 1hr before the service begins to have microphones & piano available for warm-ups 30 min before service begins
  • Set up the soundboards
  • Plug in and sound check microphones, speakers, amplifiers and piano
  • Set up standing microphones
  • Provide portable microphones to ministers.
  • Monitor the speakers, amps and microphones during the service (turning up, down, on, or off  as the service directs.
  • Unplug all components, pack into containers.

Usher

  • Put on an  "Usher" badge from the container near the Welcome table in the gym.
  • Stand inside the Sanctuary and greet the worshipers as they arrive.  Assist visitors in locating a seat.  Introduce the visitors to the members you seat them near.
  • Take your seat on the side near the entrance so you can assist latecomers.
  • Assist with collection of offering.  The plates are located on the table in the back of the Sanctuary.  Pass the plates down the rows during the Special music time. During the Offertory song, walk up the aisle and give the plates to the Assisting Minister

Youth Communion Assistant

  • Hold the trays of cups for the communicants.
  • Hold the baskets to catch the used communion cups

Volunteer Coordinator

  • Set up job rotations for worship service using time and talent volunteer forms.
  • Secure volunteers for open jobs.
  • Provide weekly information for Trumpet Notes.
  • Provide info monthly for Reveler.
  • Provide monthly report to Worship and Music committee.

Welcome and Event Tables

  • Arrive 30 minutes before the service to set up the tables with information brochures, sign up sheets, bread and welcome folders.
  • Welcome worships as they arrive, give bread and welcome folder to visitors.  Direct visitors to the sanctuary and if needed the nursery.
